Long range bridge girder evaluation using Lamb waves
Due to an equipment malfunction, a high voltage spike pulser was used for this study. As a result only the Ao mode was investigated for its effectiveness in detecting cracks in plates. There were several advantages noted when using the Ao mode. This mode is easy to generate; has long range characteristics; and has minimal dispersion at a frequency-thickness product above two. It is sensitive to cracks which are perpendicular to the axis of propagation. However, experiments on a beam which has been fatigued cracked in service are necessary to determine if this mode is sensitive to cracks which occur at an angle to the beam's axis. This project has demonstrated that the spike type pulser, when used to generate the Ao mode, may have a limited field use. However, the toneburst system is preferable due to its ability to excite other asymmetric and symmetric modes at a frequency-thickness product where little or no dispersion exists. An added advantage is that the toneburst pulser may produce a more powerful signal for longer range work.
