Lime-free castables with acceptable green strength properties, good flow and high hot strength values can be produced with hydratable aluminas. Development of the Actibond products has resulted in increased castable flow, green and hot strength properties. In a tabular alumina-based no-cement castable, the choice of dispersant has a significant effect on the flow with Calgon and Darvan 811D, giving the highest flow at 0.05 % addition. Empiphos gave lower flow but has a wider addition level over which good green strength is obtained compared with the other two dispersants, the optimum level is 0.1 %. Substitution of the fine tabular alumina with BAX 693, a large crystallite calcined alumina, gave improved flow and similar or higher HMOR (hot modulus of rupture) values in the firing temperature range of 500 to 1500 deg C. The effect of fine aggregates on castable HMOR is examined.
