590 N/mm2 class steel plate with excellent HAZ toughness by TMCP for building frames
Improvement of HAZ (heat affected zone) toughness of 590 N/mm2 class steel plate (base SA440) for high-heat-input welding has been investigated and the results have confirmed that 1) reduction of C(eq) and addition of Ti are effective for improving HAZ toughness because of the formation of fine-grained ferrite + pearlite in HAZ, and 2) due to the lower C(eq), application of TMCP (thermo-mechanical control process) effectively enables the achievement of efficient base metal properties. Based on these laboratory test results, 590 N/mm2 class steel plate with excellent HAZ toughness for building frames has been developed. The new steel has following composition: 0.12 C, 0.28 Si, 1.49 Mn, 0.015 Nb, 0.012 Ti (in wt.%), C(eq) 0.38.
