Simple connections sell steel
The connections in steel structures have a dominant influence on the costs and so on the competitive position of steel. Traditionally the connections were either considered as rigid or as pinned. As a result of considerable research efforts methods became available to more accurately determine and take advantage of the real properties of connections in the design. a. Connections have a dominant influence on the costs of steel structures. Ease of fabrication is more important then material use. The use of partial-strength/semi-rigid construction is of economic interest for bow braced and unbraced frames. In braced frames only nominally pinned or low-cost unstiffened partial-strength connections should be considered. Design information can be prepared for the pre-design of a steel structure. This will avoid the need for intensive communication between engineer and fabricator. In modern Codes as Eurocode 3 rules are given for a more realistic treatment of connection behaviour. In this paper these new methods are discussed and tools presented which allow an easy selection of economic optimal connection types.
