A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Intemational convention centre, Durban Structural steelwork superstructure
Durban will be put on the International Convention Centre map when the new complex opens in September 1997, bringing tourism and foreign exchange into the region. The complex has been designed to international standards based on the latest concept of maximum flexibility which placed challenges on the structural design, particularly with regard to the roof system. The aesthetics created complex geometric forms that required exceptional design, draughting, fabrication and erection skills, particularly in that the steel structure is featured as an architectural component of the building. A background to the requirement of a modern convention centre is presented and the ability of structural steel to accommodate these large structures, both in form and function, is discussed. The complex is located in central Durban, and has been incorporated into the pedestrian and tourism linkages through the city. The 6.25 ha site is relatively level and dominant in the cityscape. In this regard, the form of the external envelope, although following the function of the internal areas, became a prime consideration, with consequent influence on the roof structural form.
