High strength, weldable reinforcing bars
The development of weldable reinforcement in Germany and Europe is reviewed. For designers a high grade rebar of 500 N/mm2 is currently the most favorable reinforcement. If high yield strength is combined with excellent ductility, bendability, fatigue resistance, bond and weldability, everybody regards and accepts such rebars as top-quality even if welding is never applied. To reach such a goal a perfect technology must be available to produce this high quality product under these circumstances. Presuming weldability is demanded, only microalloying of heat treatment enables a steel plant to produce this quality grade. Production costs have to be taken into consideration. Standardization, application of welded rebars and production of thermally treated reinforcing bars and microalloyed reinforcing bar steels are discussed.
