Steel houses in a cold climate
A new concept for steel construction was developed and demonstrated in a comprehensive demonstration project. The aim of the project was to ensure the performance and suitability of a light-gauge steel framed house for use in a cold climate. The hygrothermal performance and structural capacity of the components was studied using computer calculations and laboratory testing for real sized structures. The heating energy consumption of the houses was simulated using building energy analysis calculations. The environmental impacts fo the use of steel compared to other load bearing materials was studied using internationally accepted guidelines for life cycle assessment. The performance and energy consumption of the demonstration buildings is being measured in a two-year monitoring project. The results so far show, that the light-gauge steel framed concept allows for construction of energy efficient buildings and, that the environmental profile of the steel house is very favourable for the use of steel in housing in the Finnish climate.
