A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
An understanding of the process of reinforcement corrosion within a reinforced-concrete (RC) structure is presented. An RC structure is compared with a fortress where the reinforcement bar is the king, the protective coating is the inner layer of security guards, the concrete-cement cover is the boundary wall, the cement layer on the outer surface of the RC structure is the trench outside the fort, and the lime-wash is the outer layer of security guards. The importance of protective measures at each level has been discussed in the light of protective measures adopted by different people from different disciplines. It is suggested that one should not rely exclusively on only one protective measure, but rather exercise a combination of measures to protect an RC structure, similar to the king who employs a number of protective measures as listed above.
