A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
As part of a European project to demonstrate the use of steel in the domestic construction sector, British Steel Strip Products, British Steel Framing, Tyawood Homes, Oxford Brookes University and the Steel Construction Institute build and monitor a multioccupancy residential demonstration building on the university campus, using the British Steel framing SureBuild light steel framing system. The three year project has three distinct objectives. Firstly, the project shall demonstrate the use and benefits of light steel framing in buildings typical of the mass of British housing stock. Secondly, the project shall demonstrate the potential of steel in applications like the open roof and the suspended ground floor. Thirdly, the project shall monitor the in service environmental and structural performance of the buildings to provide data for specifiers. The habitable area of the entire building is 275 m2, including the roof areas and the communal hallway and landings. The entire build program took 16 weeks from first cut to handover. Erection of the steel frame took just two weeks and a dry working environment was available for the following trades after only 3 weeks. The total cost of the building was 195000 GBP or 680 GBP/m2 of usable floor space. Only 12 % of the total cost was attributable to the steel framing and stairs. Insulation comprised two layers of closed cell boards, combining to give a total heat value of 0.2 W/mK. Internally, the walls were clad with 12 mm thick plasterboard, designed to provide 30 min fire resistance.
