Present situations of steel houses in Japan
Steel-framed houses are built using steel shapes cold-formed from coated steel sheets (galvanized sheet) to substitute for the wooden frames in the construction of two-by-four houses. These houses are already in practical use in the United States, Australia and several European nations. In Japan, joint research with the participation of Japan's six major steelmakers started in 1994 with the Kozai Club as the secretariat. In September 1997, the Kozai Club obtained general approval by the Minster of Construction, based on common specification for steel-framed housing construction among six major steelmakers, which will help to further promote application of steel-framed houses in Japan. Diverse preparations are being promoted for the provision of steel-framed houses to builders nation-wide in the form of nearly open building system. The report introduces the present situation and future tasks concerning the research and promotion of steel-framed houses in Japan.
