Prospects for steel in building construction (with a review of French domestic demand)
This paper reviews the pattern of steel consumption in the construction sector at large (that is to say general buildings construction and civil engineering works) in Europe, Japan and the USA. It also aims to present a breakdown of the shares of the steel market accounted for by different branches of the construction industry, distinguishing new works from repairs and restoration. The latter market is expected to grow faster in the years to come, thus presenting an opportunity for steelmakers. The paper goes on to deal with current trends and prospects in relation to steel consumption within new construction works. Two fields are highlighted in this context: the buildings market and the construction of bridges in France. Finally data concerning the repair and restoration market in France are presented, highlighting its importance in terms of both actual and potential steel consumption.
