Corrosion of steel in concrete is an electrochemical phenomenon associated with the formation of local electrolytic cells at the surface of the steel. The main factors that cause breakdown of steel passivity in concrete are insufficient alkalinity and/or the presence of aggressive ions in concrete, such as Cl(-), SO4(-), etc., as well as concrete exposure to external hostile environments. Prevention of corrosion of reinforcement in concrete should either eliminate the penetration of deleterious materials or render the reinforcement passive to their action. An innovative waste-products' mix incorporating black liquor and silica fume has been used as a concrete admixture and/or as a steel coating. It has been found that the use of such a novel mix improves the strength and long-term durability of concrete, as well as suppressing the corrosion of steel reinforcement due to penetration of aggressive ions from surrounding sulphate media.
