AbstractThe reliability and impact of several regulation policies on Lake Victoria in East Africa were investigated using the Water Rights Analysis Package (WRAP). Its reliability is determined by establishing the risk of policies failing to meet water demands. The impacts on the lake are evaluated by assessing the effect of policies for lake levels. Policies are based on (i) the lake's firm and safe water yields and (ii) dam turbine configurations at the lake's outlet. The present study demonstrated the applicability of WRAP in modelling large complex reservoirs and determined that constant release policies with a maximum limit of 1015 m3/s have low risks of failure and improve lake water‐level stability.
