A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
It is really important to understand why building contracts have clauses to allow the architect to extend the time for completion of the Works. All kinds of computer techniques have been suggested to assess delays. It is quite common for contractors to bombard the architect with reams of paper purporting to show the effect of various delays on the progress of the Works by means of computer‐generated programmes. Everyone knows that a computer performs thousands of calculations in the same it would take an ordinary human to perform one and a computer can be programmed to carry out these calculations in a specific way. That is the key benefit of using a computer to deal with extensions of time. But that does not mean that it is always necessary to use a computer. It is quite possible to decide on the critical path by applying reason and common sense to deduce the effect of delays.
