A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
An important ecosystem service is the cleaning of water. Chapter begins with this and then considers drinking water quality standards and legislation, including the Clean Water Act from the United States and the Water Framework Directive from the European Union. Contaminants are described, including pathogenic microbes (including protozoa, bacteria and viruses) and how these are treated. Also described are chemical, radioactive and pharmaceutical contaminants of drinking water as well as other environmental problems including non‐point source pollutants and urban runoff.
