A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Versioning (2002)
Taking a stand against the ‘stylistically driven’ excesses of digital design in the years leading up to the ‘dotcom crash’, in September 2002 the New York office Sharples Holden Pasquarelli (SHoP), guest‐editing AD Profile 159, Versioning, argues for a renewed interest in the actual practices of building, advocating a more hands‐on approach to the production process. ‘Versioning’ is an operative term meant to describe a recent, significant shift in the way architects and designers are using technology to expand, in time as well as in territory, the potential effects of design on our world. Versioning is important to architects because it attempts to remove architecture from a stylistically driven cycle of consumption. Versioning relies on the use of recombinant geometries that allow external influences to affect a system without losing the precision of numerical control or the ability to translate these geometries using available construction technology.
