City foundations and urbanism in the Hellenistic world
This chapter explores the nature, extent, and growth of urbanization in the Hellenistic world. It considers multiple drivers of urbanization, including the interests of kings, the impact of trade, the movement of people into new or growing urban centers, and other factors. The Hellenistic world also saw a trend toward consolidation of smaller, neighboring cities into larger agglomerations, whether imposed by kings or a local initiative. While estimating the degree of urbanization in the Hellenistic world is rife with problems, in general these centuries seem to be a period of new, high urbanization. The chapter looks too at the development of inter‐ polis networks through the activities of merchants, the draw of royal courts as centers of power, religious festivals, ties between mother‐cities and their colonies, the movement of specialists like doctors or poets, and other drivers. These ties bound the Hellenistic world into an interlinked cultural and economic koine .
