A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Aligning Construction Projects with Strategy
This chapter explores the alignment of construction projects with strategy through several case studies and offers insights for the development of project portfolio management (PPM) capabilities in construction. Most PPM research occurs in industries associated with innovation and new product development, including manufactured products, service products, and information technology development. Research in construction environments suggests that portfolio‐level management perspectives are used to align projects with strategy, especially through project selection. Semi‐structured interviews designed to explore practices used to align projects with strategy were refined after pilot testing. Multi‐project oversight underpins continuous improvement as expectations change, such as a concern for sustainability. An effective delivery of projects depends primarily on the availability of the appropriate resources, at the right place and time. Construction firms require advanced consideration of workforce planning and development that may provide insights for PPM in the wider context.
