Silt is a major problem in at least two ways to the water industry in its handling of surface water supplies. First, the treatment plant must remove the suspended silt; and second, deposits of silt or sediment deplete reservoir storage capacity. This article discusses the use of soil conservation practices within the watershed that reduce the amount of silt that reaches the reservoir or treatment plant. Soil conservation work is being carried out by soil and water conservation districts and the Soil Conservation Service throughout Illinois.
