The history of earth pressure theory
In France the building of fortifications in the age of absolutism led to the first attempts to determine earth pressure, which, in 1773/1776, achieved the status of an engineering science theory in the form of Coulomb's earth pressure theory. The assertion that earth pressure theory is the crucial reference theory in the creation of the profession of the modern civil engineer in the 18th century is explained in the first part of this chapter. As an alternative to Coulomb's classic earth pressure theory, models based on continuum mechanics and formulated by the likes of Rankine, Winkler and Boussinesq appeared from the mid‐19th century onwards, and these are examined in the second part of this chapter. The third part analyses the emancipation of earth pressure research from theory of structures – as represented by Terzaghi and his school – and describes its integration into the emerging distinct disciplinary structure of geotechnical engineering. This chapter is the first complete history of earth pressure theory from 1700 to the present‐day.
