Calibrating Water Distribution System Models
In response to the article entitled “Using Water Distribution System Models” by Thomas M. Walski (JOURNAL AWWA February 1983), Stephen W. Maloney writes to express his concern over the criterion used by Walski for calibration. Maloney suggests determining the degree of calibration of a computer model by comparing flows predicted by the field test and computer simulation at some arbitrary residual pressure. This type of comparison considers changes in head loss and thus removes the influence of the elevation data from calculations. Simulation equations are presented and explained. Walski responds in agreement with Maloney and states that the criterion for model calibration should be the ratio of observed to predicted head loss.
