Concrete Design Examples
Three typical concrete superstructure designs are given. The first example is the design of a concrete deck followed by design examples of solid slab, T‐beam, and prestressed girder bridges. This chapter describes the notation used to indicate locations of critical sections for moments and shears. This notation is used throughout the example problems. It also includes tables that may be helpful to a designer when selecting bars sizes and prestressing tendons. The design examples generally follow the outline of Appendix A—Basic Steps for Concrete Bridges given at the end of Section 5 of the AASHTO (2017) LRFD Bridge Specifications. Each designer must take the responsibility for understanding and correctly applying the provisions of the specifications.
