Inertia Effects and Plastic Hinges
The structural response can be represented by the subsequent motion and deformation of the central line or the middle surface of the structure. For the analysis of a structure under transverse dynamic loading, it is necessary to distinguish its short‐term transient response and its long‐term structural response. The inertia of the structure plays an essential role in its long‐term response. In order to assess the response of the structure, it is necessary to calculate the shear force and bending moment under both the external loads and the inertia forces. This chapter discusses how to analyze internal forces (especially the shear force and bending moment) in a beam when the inertia effect is taken into account. It also focuses on a sketch of the dynamic deformation mechanism containing three plastic hinges. It discusses the dynamic response of a free ring subjected to a radial dynamic load.
