Connections with Mechanical Fasteners
This chapter provides design rules i.e., Eurocode 3 Part 1‐8 (EN 1993‐1‐8) for mechanical fasteners. The designer will find here application rules for different types of mechanical fasteners: bolts, injections bolts, anchor bolts, rivets and pins. The very basic connection is composed of a bolt assembly connecting two steel plates. Eurocode 3 distinguishes different categories of bolted connections. The two main categories, dependent on the loading applied to the bolt, are shear connections and tension connections. Dependent on the performance specification of a connection, bolts may be used as preloaded or non‐preloaded bolts. In some particular cases, for example in connections subjected to dynamic loading, it is or it could be required that bolts be preloaded in order to ensure a minimum clamping force between connected plates. Finally, the chapter discusses the behaviour and the design of bolted lap joints, bolted T‐stubs, gusset plates, and long joints.
