Experimental Investigation of the Emergence of Strain Localization in Geomaterials
This chapter looks at on the contributions of recent developments on the characterization of the strain localization process. The emergence of strain localization involves the progressive evolution from diffuse to localized deformation. The chapter introduces the methods used and then shows some selected experimental results obtained from some sands and porous rocks. Localized deformation is a ubiquitous phenomenon in geomaterials. The chapter reviews the recent experimental observations about the progressive evolution from diffuse to localized deformation. It presents some selected results that illustrates the transition from diffuse to localized deformation in sands and porous rocks. Digital image correlation provides a displacement field measurement between two images of the specimen. X‐ray computed tomography is a method of reconstructing a 3D field of an X‐ray attenuation coefficient inside an object, starting from a series of different projections of the object.
