A conversation with water utility managers
This article provides insights for utility managers who have an “ear” to the conversation about what their peers across the country believe to be the most important issues affecting their utilities, and what they believe are possible solutions. In a series of lunchtime workshops held across the country over the course of 2009, managers discussed the effects of five areas on their utilities: environment, finance, infrastructure, workforce, and community. Within these five areas the major issues that surfaced were remarkably consistent, given the diversity of the participants. One especially significant finding was the need for utility managers to continue talking to one another in order to move collaboratively toward solutions. The consistency of these findings brings into focus the need for solutions that can provide momentum for utility managers to act together.
