A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Pantograph/catenary systems are used to supply power for electrically operated trains. This chapter presents mathematical formulations that can be used for the virtual prototyping and design of pantograph/catenary systems. It focuses on developing computational approaches that can be integrated with general multibody system algorithms for computer modeling and simulation of electrically operated railroad vehicle systems. To ensure the efficient and safe operation of pantograph/catenary systems, and to minimize loss of contact, which can lead to arcing, several important issues must be taken into consideration, including proper design of the system to maintain contact between the pantograph and catenary wire, the effect of aerodynamic forces, wear control and reduction, and temperature effects. Some of these topics are discussed in this chapter. The absolute nodal coordinate formulation element displacement fields defined in the preceding section for the cable and fully parameterized elements can be used to develop the expressions of the element inertia and elastic forces.
