Life Cycle Costing and Sustainability Assessments
An Industry Perspective with Case Studies
This chapter explores the relationship between life cycle costing and sustainability and the application of life cycle costing as a technique to make an informed decision about the trade‐off between economic, environmental and social costs. It deals with key sustainability considerations at the early stages of the design process. The chapter also explains the key elements of the Standardised Method of Life Cycle Costing (SMLCC). It discusses the life cycle costing methodology as a tool in assessing the sustainability of the built environment, which can be used also as an integral part of the wider business case, from a whole life costing and best value perspective. The chapter presents case studies that show how life cycle costing is applied in practice as an economic evaluation technique. However, it is important to recognise that the primary driver of life cycle costing in informing the decision maker is cost.
