“Aging in place” is often aging in isolation and leads to loneliness and depression. Assisted living (AL) is an improvement over skilled nursing and can delay or eliminate placement in an institution. The apartment for life (AFL) model provides personal and medical care in independent housing. Dogs, cats, pets, plants, and children can create positive, unique, and memorable experiences. Advances in artificial intelligence can make future social robots valuable companions. The “Age‐Friendly City” program helps older frail people live independently by creating a more supportive urban infrastructure. With the advent of Program for All‐inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) new programs creatively combine housing and services. Long‐term care (LTC) has been redefining itself, and more home care approaches seem inevitable and logical, especially with the proliferation of new technology. Northern European nursing homes have larger single occupancy units in small clusters.
