This chapter treats the damage of structural concrete by salt crystallization. Typical structure cases are first introduced for structural concretes affected by airborne salts and saline soils. The mechanism of crystallization damage is explained through the fundamental concepts of salts crystallization in pores, and the main influential factors are analyzed comprehensively. Special attention is given to reinforced concrete elements that are partially buried and partially exposed. Based on current knowledge, two models are given for pore crystallization: one addressing critical supersaturation and one the mean stress in pores. The last part of the chapter is dedicated to the structural consequence of damage and the corresponding design considerations.
