The scale of the fractures dictates the flow with the smallest of the interconnected system controlling the exit of oil and gas from the rock matrix while the largest set of the interconnected system controls the short‐term very high‐flow rate from a well that intersects it. The properties of the natural‐fracture sets or modeling parameters can show a variety of distributions; for example, log‐normal, power law, or fractal. To be considered fractal, the plot should depict a linear relation over more than one log cycle with the slope of the linear portion being the fractal dimension. In many instances, people can measure fracture property statistics in the wellbores and from geophysical attributes but have little data on the statistics of the intermediate scale fracture features. With the relation and the fractal dimension people can generate fracture sets that they cannot measure but are consistent with the ends of the total distribution.
