A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
BIM Tomorrow
Trends in Technology
Advanced technologies are being applied to building information modeling (BIM) design processes, expanding the scope and role of digital design. Insights from industry experts illustrate ways that these technologies can enhance rather than hinder the creative process, as much as they contribute to efficient project delivery. While a great number of ideas and processes are having effects across the entire spectrum of building design, construction and operations, this chapter focuses on a few trends that impact the design process: digital realities: virtual, augmented, and mixed modes; computational design and visual programming languages; light detection and ranging, photogrammetry, and point clouds; and artificial intelligence. Rather than being mere stand‐alone novelties, these technologies are applicable to various BIM‐based design processes, with the potential for leveraging the designer's efforts, in addition to increasing efficiencies while adding value to the overall project.
