Ecosystem Services
Ecosystem services refer to any of the benefits that ecosystems—both natural and semi‐natural—provide to human society. These services include food and raw material provision, air and water purification, biodiversity maintenance, and aesthetic and other cultural benefits. Among stormwater control measures, constructed stormwater wetlands are considered to have the most potential to provide a great quantity of high‐quality ecosystem services. Some types of green infrastructure provide habitat for a wide variety of plant and animal species, including fish, birds, insects, amphibians, and aquatic invertebrates. Information services contribute to human well‐being by providing a place for recreation, education, and aesthetic experiences as well as opportunities for reflection, spiritual enrichment, and even artistic inspiration. In addition to the expected services related to stormwater hydrologic and water‐quality benefits, habitat value and cultural uses are discussed.
