A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Bills of quantities are detailed lists of all the work, goods, and materials needed to construct a particular structure. Their purpose is to enable prices to be apportioned to each item so that the total of all the items is the total price for constructing the building. They also help variations to be valued and certificates to be prepared. Bills of quantities are usually prepared by quantity surveyors. Bills would rarely be prepared by the employer for small jobs, reliance being put on drawings and specification alone, but again the contractor would have to prepare a list of items in order to arrive at a tender figure. The bills of quantities are usually divided into the following parts: preliminaries, preambles, measured work, and provisional sums and dayworks. The list is set out in the order of the construction of the building.
