Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Components
Mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) components used in a building information model (BIM) generally require fewer graphics and a considerable amount of information. The basic types of components associated with a plumbing or piping system are the pipes, the pipe fittings, and the fixtures or equipment. One of the most important things to consider when developing BIM content for MEP objects is how the component is placed. Graphics are not as relevant as the information contained within them and are limited to gross sizes and connection locations. Plumbing components are broken into four basic categories: domestic water supply, sanitary, hydronic, and fire protection. Most plumbing components can be categorized as fixtures, with the exception of specialized pipe fittings used within piping systems. There are three basic types of electrical objects: equipment, devices, and lighting components. Many larger components used on a project are electrical in nature, but are overlooked in terms of their MEP functionality.
