Disinfection and “Emerging” Pathogen Threats
In the bad old days, water utilities worried about serving pathogen‐contaminated water that produced typhoid fever, cholera, and diarrheal diseases. With the advent of chlorination and the later implementation of filtration and other effective disinfectants, many utility managers may have felt that their job was done as long as they maintained effective barriers with the production of pathogen‐free water and the maintenance of a secondary disinfectant residual. In effect, we thought that the danger would be controlled by our practices prior to the water meter. Hundreds of articles since then have focused on what we have been calling “emerging pathogens.” We cannot call these pathogens “emerging” any longer. They are here, and we have to deal with them.
