Water Harvesting and Conservation in Romania
Increasing frequency of extreme weather events, such as intense rainstorms and droughts, may be one of the most significant consequences of climate change in the coming decades in countries in eastern Europe, including Romania. Implementing a sustainable agricultural management and identifying viable solutions to respond to the effects of climate change is a subject of major importance for countries in central and eastern Europe. The aim of water harvesting is to collect runoff or groundwater from areas of surplus or where it is not used, store it and make it available, where and when there is water shortage. Water conservation is the preservation, control, and management of water resources. Western Romania is frequently affected by periods with intense rains, resulting in a temporary water excess. These periods alternate with drought events of different intensities.
