New Concepts for Desalting Brackish Water
This article discusses several of the more promising processes for desalting brackish water and provides economic data where available. The processes discussed include: multi‐stage flash distillation; multiple‐effect distillation; vapor compression distillation; solar distillation; electrodialysis; reverse osmosis; ion exchange; freezing processes; and, hydrate formation. A new desalting process is discussed that uses a high capacity weakly basic resin that is highly selective for bicarbonate‐mineral acidity and can therefore convert salts in saline water to bicarbonate form.
