Oregon Workforce Survey Results
This article discusses the results of a 2008 survey of the operator certification workforce done by Oregon's Department of Human Services, Drinking Water Program, to determine the number of drinking water operators in the state who were planning to retire in the near future. The article compares the results of this survey with a 2005 Water Research Foundation study, and found that the trend in Oregon in 2008 is different than the national trend in the 2005 survey. The article includes an inset describing a 2009 online survey by AWWA and RSM McGladrey Inc. to collect information on recent human resource changes and other cost‐control initiatives at North American water utilities. “Water Workforce Trends: Impact of the 2009 Economy, A Comprehensive Survey” addresses staffing levels, hiring practices/policies, salary increase budgets and projections, payroll budget adjustments, short‐term incentive plans, shift differentials and premiums, and cost control programs.
