For those of us who love cities, the smart city is where we want to live, work, play, raise a family, start a business, or simply stroll around on a pleasant day. The smart city inspires genius and originality. This chapter approaches the smart city from the perspective of the human spirit. Cities offer more economic opportunities, higher standards of living, more services, better health, and more access to culture than rural communities. Smart cities are beneficiaries of a new method of urban planning that emphasizes collaboration, co‐creation, crowdsourcing, and grassroots efforts. The new method combines bottom‐up innovation with cross‐functional insight to create entirely fresh and original solutions for complex problems. Smart‐city planning depends on strong and healthy relationships between the private and public sectors. Open data, which is any kind of public data that can be easily downloaded and analyzed by any groups or individuals, also plays an important role in smart cities.
