A report of the Sludge Disposal Committee published in the September and October 1978 issues of Journal AWWA1,2 reviewed the production, processing, and disposal of water treatment plant sludges, concentrating primarily on chemical coagulation sludges at the expense of softening sludges. This report provides an overview on softening sludges and recent technological advances in their handling and disposal and suggests areas for future investigation.
