Developments in Plastics and Plastic Pipe
This article discusses research developments in plastics and plastic pipe. It begins by providing a brief overview of two general classes of plastic: thermoplastics, or celluloid; and, thermosetting plastics or phenol formaldehyde. The article discusses commercially important materials used for thermoplastic pipe, including: polyethylene; acrylonitrile‐ butadiene‐styrene (ABS); polyvinyl chloride (PVC); and, cellulose acetate butyrate (butyrate). Reinforced thermosetting plastics and their performance are discussed, along with an improvement process known as orientation.
