Analysis and Design
Analysis and design of bridge superstructures is made, after the concept design stage, and is made on the basis of simplified models. This chapter discusses specific aspects of structural analysis of bridge decks. Design of steel and composite decks is based on general ultimate limit states and serviceability limit states criteria with specific aspects. The chapter aims to cover main specific aspects of analysis and design of bridge superstructures. One specific aspect of bridge structural analysis is the need and possibility of performing transverse and longitudinal structural analyses on the basis of two different models. Of course, this approach may be replaced by an integrated 3D shell model analysis where transverse and longitudinal behaviours of the superstructure are jointly considered. The chapter also discusses general methods of analysis for determining internal forces, transverse load distribution and structural behaviour.
