Earthquake Analysis of Arch Dams
Factors to Be Included
This chapter first identifies the principal effects of dam–water–foundation interaction, gleaned from frequency response functions for arch dams computed for a wide range of system parameters. Thereafter, it investigates the significance of these effects in earthquake response of arch dams with the objective of identifying the factors that must be included to obtain realistic estimates of response in designing new dams and evaluating existing dams. For this purpose, the chapter presents results of earthquake response analyses of four arch dams, conducted by the US Bureau of Reclamation. Based on these results, it identifies the implications of neglecting the following factors: mass of the foundation rock; and compressibility of water, assumptions that are not uncommon in analyses of dams implemented by professional engineers. Finally, the chapter explores the influence of spatial variation in ground motions around the canyon in earthquake response of dams.
