Quay walls and superstructures in concrete
This chapter discusses the design for design principles for quay walls and superstructures in concrete. The chapter takes into account the loads and stresses in hydraulic engineering and the ensuing increased requirements regarding the construction and maintenance of concrete components in contact with water. It talks about design and construction of reinforced concrete components in waterfront structures, block‐type quay walls, diaphragm walls, and concrete components in hydraulic engineering structures. The chapter also discusses the execution of repair works above water in detail. If concrete components have to be repaired, an experienced engineer must always be brought in to ascertain the actual condition, assess and plan the repairs. The effect of the defects and damage on the stability, serviceability and durability of the structure must be assessed on the basis of a thorough survey of the structure according to R 194, section 10.11.
