This discusses how White Arkitekter won the international competition to redesign Kiruna, a small Swedish city north of the Arctic Circle, in 2013, requiring relocation by two meters over 20‐year period. White has several specialist teams of designers and researchers, focused on developing and utilizing digital design tools for environmental simulation and computation. White's design for the SEB bank headquarters in Stockholm is designed to be a bright, open building that communicates transparency and connection to the site. The iterative workflow of designing and simulating options, and then taking the feedback and designing again, allowed the designers to tune the designs to a more optimal solution. Measuring daylight factor in the spaces, in order to calibrate the digital model of the building, allowed designers to gain feedback about how the spaces were performing when in use. The office's goal to push each project to engage with sustainable and innovative design parameters is being advanced through experimentation with digital and parametric design, and making better use of building information modeling (BIM).
