Terrassen
This chapter presents the history and development process of Terrassen. It then addresses changing trends in architecture and urban design of Terrassen. The Falkenried Terrassen's explicit reference to the English ‘terrace’ reveals only a small part of the project's interest as a housing type. It is first and foremost a spatially fascinating and rare example of creative space planning that incorporates three highly functional features: a ventilation courtyard, green playground and busy passageway. The Falkenried complex was built as a private housing development in the late 19th century in the area of Eppendorf in the northern district of Hamburg. The Falkenried development is a mixture of English and local influences, whose origins can be traced back to the long plots traditionally found in the old town of Hamburg.
