Environmentally Sustainable Corrosion Inhibitors in Oil and Gas Industry
The corrosion of tubular steels impacts considerable economic losses in the oil and gas industry during the acidizing of oil wells. One of the common practices to address this situation is the application of organic molecules as corrosion inhibitors. The corrosion inhibitors traditionally used are difficult to prepare, expensive, and are quite toxic. Considering the above issue, a number of guidelines have been proposed to restrict the practice of using toxic corrosion inhibitors. A number of reports have also appeared on the use of environment‐friendly corrosion inhibitors. The present chapter collects the literature on several important categories of the environment‐friendly inhibitors put forward for this application. This includes the ionic liquids, plant extracts, chemical medicines, and a couple of new classes, namely, the chemically functionalized biopolymers and functionalized graphene oxides as corrosion inhibitors.
