Consolidation and Settlement
The settlement of soils in response to loading can be broadly divided into two types: elastic and time‐dependent settlement. Elastic settlements are the simplest to deal with; they are instantaneous, recoverable, and can be calculated from linear elastic theory. Time‐dependent settlements occur in both granular and cohesive soils, although the response time for granular soils is usually short. In clays, two types of time‐dependent settlement are recognised: primary consolidation results, and secondary compression in clays. The rate of settlement of a saturated soil is expressed by the coefficient of consolidation (cv). The rate of settlement of a soil, and hence the value of cv, is governed by two factors: the amount of water to be squeezed out of the soil; and the rate at which that water can flow out. There are several methods for estimating settlements of structures on sands and gravels using standard penetration test (SPT) N‐values, such as Burland and Burbridge method.
