A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Finding a Balance
Data and data science will play enormous roles in smart cities. This chapter provides information and examples demonstrating the value of data and data science within the context of smart cities. Data science gives greater visibility into what's happening and reveals hidden patterns that can help cities make better decisions about allocating resources. The relationship between smart cities and data is unavoidable. Continuous data collection and monitoring will be standard features of smart cities. The data is fed into algorithms designed to generate information that can be used to make decisions about everything from turning on streetlights to setting bail for accused felons. As algorithms play larger roles in our lives, their inherent limitations are becoming more obvious. Smart cities will unquestionably have the means to track and monitor people more effectively. National governments might try to set standards, but the cities themselves will probably decide what levels of surveillance are appropriate and practical.
